Decorating Loos performance
Name of work: ‘Cultural Evolution’
Performance. 10.6.10
Duration: 60 mins
This performance is a response to the statement within Loo’s seminal essay ‘Ornament and crime (1908) in which he states ‘The evolution of culture is synonymous with the removal of ornament from objects of daily use’.
A tattoo artist will ‘remove’ an existing tattoo on my body – which will demonstrate the notion of decoration within a contemporary context – that tattooing is now an extension of the personality and self, rather than a distraction from the true essence of an object.
